Are Teachers Essential Workers?

My sister in law is a teacher in the mighty state of Louisiana and was relating their school reopening plans.  Students are to wear masks in open areas, extra time is needed for hand washing, packaged foods for lunch and so on.    PPE for teachers is a hard question.  What is required?  What funding is available?  It begs the relevant and timely question – are teachers essential workers?

After months of home lessons, we can laugh out loud and guess that every parent in the country would declare teachers essential.  There is nothing like three months of housebound kids and virtual lessons to make us mere mortals wonder how teachers do it every day.  It has brought about a new level of appreciation and understanding.

Now we are asking our teachers to take on even more of a challenge – do the job while coping while adding on the dangers of COVID.   Be responsible for keeping your students safe, and yourself while you are at it.  Figure out a way to keep our kids learning during a pandemic.  No easy answer, or really any answers, but please do it.  We trust you.  All this, while still not declaring our teachers as essential?

Even as states battle whether to reopen schools and mandate teacher participation, teachers have not been classified as essential.   We can all shake our head trying to figure that one out.

Would declaring our teachers essential give them better funding?  Maybe, maybe not.  It might give them a boost in some locations.   However, in every location it would be an endorsement of their value.    That is really the heart of this discussion.  Teachers deserve the recognition
